The necessity of a sneeze guard in food preparation, especially in front of customers, lies in its ability to serve as a physical barrier that protects food from airborne contaminants, such as saliva and respiratory droplets. When food is being prepared in open settings, there is a risk of contamination from people nearby, and the sneeze guard effectively minimizes that risk by preventing direct exposure to the food. This is particularly critical in environments like buffets or open kitchens, where the interaction between staff and customers can increase the potential for foodborne illnesses.

While other items like plastic wrap, food covers, and cling film can offer protection, they are typically used for covering food items from direct contact or to preserve the freshness of food, but do not provide the same level of barrier against airborne pathogens as a sneeze guard does. Thus, the sneeze guard is the most suitable choice for protecting food during preparation in customer-facing situations.
